In 2023, the road transport sector in Russia showed significant growth, especially in the domestic transportation segment. However, at the international level, there are changes in trends and directions. For example, the intensive growth in trade with countries such as Georgia and Armenia, which was recorded in 2022, has slowed down. Difficulties have also arisen in transport links with Kazakhstan, while ties with other Central Asian countries have revived.
Belarus continues to be the leader among foreign routes of cargo transportation, but it is worth noting a significant increase in the direction of China, which has tripled its traffic volume. Experts note that this area will continue to strengthen against the background of a general increase in the cost of road transportation.
The domestic road transport market is showing a positive trend. According to industry sources, the number of requests for transportation within the country increased by one and a half times, although by the end of the year, the growth rate slowed down to 29%. In 2022, there was an increase in demand for international, mainly import transportation, due to the shift of European cargo towards Central Asia and the Caucasus. Now the focus is shifting to domestic transportation, which is mostly associated with import substitution.
Delivery to retail chains is also showing dynamic growth. There is a decrease in cargo traffic from Moscow to the regions, while the volume of interregional traffic is increasing, especially from the Urals to the Far East and back, due to an increase in the transportation of goods from China.
The main problems in the field of road transportation remain blocked roads and bad weather conditions, which lead to the need to use more vehicles, reduces timely delivery and increases transportation costs.
